HOSTS (Help One Student To Succeed) is a structured literacy mentoring program at Cesar Chavez Community School. Mentors work one-to-one with a student for 30 minutes, using easy-to-follow lesson plans that target specific literacy skills based on current standards with a focus on reading, writing, vocabulary, informational text, skill building, spelling, and modeled reading. Lessons are prepared by the HOSTS teacher. Mentors simply carry out the instructions for the day from the student folder. HOSTS is designed to improve the reading level of students not yet on grade level. Students and mentors alike enthusiastically love the program.
