YOUTH & PARENTS
Why Should I enroll [my child] into a mentoring or tutoring program?
Whether you enroll your child into a mentoring program or find a tutor for them, there are tremendous benefits. By having a caring adult in your child’s life, it can help build their self-esteem, promotes positive choices and much more! Here are just a few of the benefits:
“According to MENTOR, when compared to their peers these kids are 52% less likely to skip a day of school, 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, and 27% less likely to drink alcohol. Many parents [and grandparents] seek the help of mentors because they want to expose their children to more opportunities. "All of them (parents [and grandparents]), regardless of the situation, want things better for their kids," Sandra LaFleur says. Mentors can show kids the importance of doing well in school, take them to concerts or museums, expose them to things they may not have otherwise experienced. This relationship helps children see their own potential to be successful.”
Supports One-on-One Learning
Overcrowded classrooms are another issue which often affects a child's ability to learn, Charlene Andersson believes. A class of thirty or more students by definition, limit a teacher's ability to give kids one-on-one time to explain concepts fully or to answer every child's question.
Builds Confidence and Self-Esteem
Kids are so eager to please their parents [grandparents] that sometimes, they don't communicate their struggles fully. A good tutor will take time to get to know your child, creating a safe space for them to discuss issues that might be affecting their ability to learn. This can enhance their feelings of self-worth and esteem as well as bolster up their skills at school.
Helps Maintain Acquired Skills During the Summer
Tutoring can be beneficial to children during the summer months, if you have concerns that they will lose some of the ground they gained over the past year.
*Please note, not all tutoring programs listed on our site are available at all Santa Fe Public Schools. Please refer to the program’s page for more detailed information.
